Being only a party of two on a glacier is far from ideal. During roped ascent if one breaks through a crevasse roof, the other may need to haul them out. By tying overhand loops in the rope this system is designed help one person hold the others' fall to prevent the situation getting worse. However, that makes the original rope unsuitable for hauling as the knots purpose is to bite into the crevasse lip. The other aim of this system is to maximise mechanical efficiency making rescue easier for one person. By hauling on a c-pulley by using a z-pully the system achieves a 6:1 ratio.
NOTE: This is a not a recommended fool proof two person crevasse rescue system.
A lot of the back country snowboard touring we do requires glacier travel, so crevasse rescue is a vital skill that we rehearse often.
Since a two person team makes rescue harder, more equipment is needed to set up the required system. Along with a single 60m rope we both carry the following crevasse rescue kit:
- climbing harness
- 1 ice screw
- 2 slings
- 1 prussic
- 1 Ropeman
- 2 pulleys
- 5 carabiners
